Nov. 12, 2003 William Frett, superintendent of schools for the St. Thomas-St. John District, announced at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday that all public schools in the district would be closed due to the severe rainy weather of the last few days. Fifteen minutes later Gov. Charles W. Turnbull called Radio One WVWI to announce that all public schools would be closed.
"Though the rain is lessening, we can't be sure there won't be more rain," Turnbull said. "We can't leave the children stranded" if the rain starts again.
Several private schools will also be closed: All Saints Cathedral School, Wesleyan Academy, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Bethel Baptist Seventh-day Adventist School, Tutu Church of God Academy, Faith Alive Christian Academy, the after-school tutorial at the Lutheran Church Project Hope.
Montessori School is open, though without school buses students may not be able to get there, school principal Shournagh McWeeney told Radio One.
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are both closed for the entire day.
— An agent answering the phone at Varlack Ventures confirmed ferry service between Cruz Bay and downtown Charlotte Amalie had been suspended for the day.
— Adult Continuing Education classes have been cancelled for Wednesday night. In a release sent late Wednesday Alcede S. Edwards, program administrator, called off the classes "to protect the well-being of staff and students that attend our program."
— The St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Gold's Gym has been cancelled. The next scheduled Business After Hours will be held Dec. 11 at Noche Restaurant in Frenchtown.
