The Anguilla Landfill reopened Monday morning after a fire forced a three-day closure, Waste Management Authority officials said.
Residents were urged to use caution when accessing the site.
During the fire, the Sugar Apple Bed & Breakfast offered free hotel rooms to residents downwind of the fire that released toxic fumes toward residents, businesses and travelers.
“These fumes contain known carcinogens and pose a significant health concern to residents,” authority officials said.
“We’re encouraging other hotels and residents with an extra room to offer temporary housing for people that are otherwise forced to breathe this toxic air as they sleep” said Ryan Flegal, co-owner of the Sugar Apple Bed & Breakfast. “Together we can help take care of each other while the government works to find a permanent solution to the ongoing dump fire problem.”
