On New Year’s Day, Michael Connors walked 10 hours and 26.8 miles from Point Udall, the easternmost point of St. Croix, to the Whim Museum on the edge of the West End’s Frederiksted town sporting bright yellow “Save Whim Museum” vests on his back and chest.

“The purpose of the save Whim walkathon was to bring attention to the continual deterioration of Whim Museum’s structures due to purposeful neglect,” said Connors, who is 80.
The Save Whim branch of Landmark’s membership has been advocating for membership meetings, financial information and the election of officers for the last five years or more. They also want to see work to repair and rebuild the island’s historic treasure.

As Connors made his way west in 80-degree heat, he handed out around 100 bumper stickers with the “Save Whim” message and a few applications for membership to Whim’s Landmark Society. The fast-moving vehicles along Queen Mary Highway were filled with curious, friendly people and he did not experience any negative responses, he said.
