Single Vehicle Car Crash Leaves One Dead

A vehicle crashed and caught fire on St. Croix Sunday, leaving one person dead, the V.I. Police Department reported.

VIPD was dispatched Sunday around 12:05 a.m. to Catherine’s Rest Road, Route 83, to investigate a vehicle collision in the vicinity of the synagogue, according to the police report.

When officers arrived on scene, they witnessed a vehicle engulfed in flames, at which point they notified 911 and the Fire Department. Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and took control of the fire. When the fire was extinguished officers observed a body in the driver’s seat of a Jeep Wrangler, the police report stated.

An investigation took place and preliminary findings revealed the operator of the vehicle was heading southbound on Catherine’s Rest Road, Route 83, when they lost control of the vehicle, veered into the northbound lane then into the western shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree on the western shoulder of the road and flipped onto its side and caught on fire. The start of the fire is unknown at this time, the report stated.

The Traffic Investigation Bureau is currently investigating this incident. Due to the severity of the crash, the deceased cannot be positively identified at this time. The identification process is pending, police said.
