Violent crime may still be a problem in the Virgin Islands, but on Thursday evening residents can come out and take back the night in Frederiksted, joining neighbors in a march against murder and domestic violence.
For 37 years, the St. Croix Women’s Coalition has held this annual candlelight vigil and march, remembering and showing solidarity with the victims of domestic violence.
“We march in silent protest for murder victims and survivors, and to keep the focus on ending domestic violence in our community,” Women’s Coalition Executive Director Clema Lewis said in a news release.
The march will start at 5:45 p.m. by the Frederiksted Fish Market and end with a rally at the Eliza McBean Clock Tower.
“We want everyone to come out,” said Carolyn Forno, WCSC’s assistant director. “Remember to wear purple, or if you have created a T-shirt or other clothing in honor of a loved one, please wear it.”
Community service hours are available for participating high school students.
Lewis said this year there is a special focus for the march.
“This year’s march is dedicated to our beloved sister, Rigmerle Finch, who passed away last week. Riggie was a victim advocate for over 20 years and our shelter therapist,” Lewis said.
“We’re also supporting the National Network to End Domestic Violence’s Purple Thursday Campaign,” Lewis added. “This is another meaningful reason to wear purple in solidarity with victims and survivors of domestic violence.”
Free purple ribbons will be available at business locations all over the island, at WCSC’s main office/crisis center, 45 Fisher St., Christiansted, and at the group’s thrift store, Closet To Closet, at 15 Peter’s Rest.
