V.I. Police Officer Donald Liburd pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he and members of his administration allegedly embezzled more than $100,000 while he was president of the Police Benevolent Association.
During a hearing Thursday in Magistrate Court on St. Thomas, Liburd asked for a speedy trial after entering his plea.
The case was assigned to V.I. Superior Court Judge Michael Dunston.
During his advice of rights hearing last month, the 48-year-old Liburd was told he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the charges.
Liburd is on leave without pay from the V.I. Police Department. He was released last month on a $25,000 unsecured bond on the condition that he does not violate any local or federal laws, leave the jurisdiction without notifying the court, report to probation officer weekly, maintain contact with his attorneys and not possess any weapons, among other conditions.
