The Yankees, Rafael Jackson AA Baseball League’s defending champions, continue to distance themselves from the rest of the league with a resounding 16-6 thrashing of the Cobras Wednesday night at the D.C. Canegata ballpark.
Except for a tough last inning victory over the ageless wonders, the 40 Plus Hurricanes, the Yanks have dispatched everyone else with relative ease. They have now won six in a row after dropping their season opener.
The Yankees have arguably the most balanced pitching staff comprising a few good, young arms anchored by the veteran hurlers Mackeel Rogers and Leroy “Dedo” Simmonds.
Offensively they are second to none. The only hindrance could have been their defense, but with the rest of the league not doing any better in that category it has not been a problem so far.
On Wednesday it was one of the live young arms, Jose Cruz, who took the mound and turned in yet another dominating performance by Yankees pitching. Cruz allowed just two hits but his defense allowed six runs on five errors.
The Cobras, who also committed five errors, had their hands full with the hard-throwing Cruz.
It was the Yankees with 16 runs on 13 hits and five errors, while the Cobras finished with six runs on two hits and five errors.
Top batters for the champs were Simmonds, (2 for 3 with three RBIs), Khalid Mathew (2 for 2 with two RBIs), Dwayne Harvey (2 for 3 with two RBIs), Reynaldo Sierra (2 for 3 with one RBI) and Ian Lewis (2 for 4 with one RBI).
For the Cobras, Jeffrey Bryan was 1 for 1 and Lizangel Pilier was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
