Brief: Breads, Desserts Doled Out to Homeless

Patricia Cummins and some of her baked goods. Many of the territory’s homeless will at least not go hungry this holiday weekend, as the Christian Science Society of St. Thomas & St. John donated 200 servings of artisan breads and desserts to the Volunteers of the Virgin Islands.

The Volunteers will distribute food on Friday and Monday. The group steps in on days when regular food banks are not operating, in this case Friday, due to the Good Friday holiday.

The breads, of many varieties, are all made of whole wheat and unenriched unbleached flours with whole grains, seeds, and fruits. Only a spoon, a bucket, and heat source were used to make and bake the breads.

The breads and desserts are baked by Patricia Cummins, a member of the Christian Science Society and a first place award winner for Artisan Breads at the 2009 UVI Afternoon on the Green competition.

Cummins said that “baking these treats is an extension of the Christian Science Society’s Community Outreach program. It is a sense of fellowship, breaking bread, a labor of love.” She said she hopes the breads will fill stomachs, and provide energy and sustenance, and that the desserts will bring smiles to the faces of the less fortunate, especially the children.
