Homecoming Games Set Saturday for Bucs, Lady Bucs Basketball Squads UVI’s Buccaneers and Lady Bucs varsity basketball squads face a full weekend of home games with the men’s squad hosting Polytecnica University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, and both the Lady Bucs and Buccaneers playing contests designated as homecoming games on Saturday, Feb. 20, against Metropolitan University (UMET). Tipoff time for the Lady Bucs game is 6:30 p.m., with the Buccaneers following at 8:30 p.m.

St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Invited to ‘Meet and Greet’ President Hall on Feb. 26 The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association will host a “Meet and Greet” session at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Dr. David Hall, UVI’s 5th president, will be the chapter’s guest. Chapter President Jacqueline A. Sprauve said the evening will give alumni a chance to interact with Dr. Hall and learn of his intentions for the university. A question and answer period will be included. Panel Discussion on V.I. Self Determination Set Feb. 25 on St. Croix A panel discussion on the implications of pending federal legislation on the self determination of the U.S. Virgin Islands will be held on UVI’s St. Croix campus from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25. The session will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing. Invited panelists include V.I. Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen, former V.I. Political Status Commission Executive Director Gerard Emanuel, international governance advisor Dr. Carlyle Corbin, attorney Genevieve Whitaker, and youth activist Amaris Chew. Judith L. Bourne, president of the United Nations Association of the Virgin Islands, will be the moderator.
Several legislative measures designed to advance the political development of U.S. territories have been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. The implications of these proposals will be explored during the session, which is jointly hosted by the United Nations Association of the Virgin Islands and the University of the Virgin Islands. Call for Cooks Issued for 2010 Afternoon on the Green UVI’s Afternoon on the Green Committee has issued a “Call for Cooks” for the 2010 edition of the University’s annual “friend-raising” event scheduled for March 7, on the St. Thomas campus. March 15 is Deadline to Apply for UVI Scholarships for Fall 2010, Spring 2011 The University of the Virgin Islands Scholarship Committee has announced that the application period for fall 2010 and spring 2011 scholarships begins today (Feb. 15) and runs through Monday, March 15, 2010. Scholarship forms for three groups of students – High School, Undergraduate/Graduate, and International – have been prepared. The forms are available from the Scholarships page of the Financial Aid Section of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu – and from these direct links: High School Students | Undergraduate/Graduate Students | International Students.

AOG Committee to Present Two Scholarships; Seeks Applications, Nominations The UVI Afternoon on the Green (AOG) Committee is accepting applications and nominations for two scholarships that will be funded from proceeds generated at the university’s annual Afternoon on the Green activity, which will be held this year on Sunday, March 7, on the St. Thomas campus. The scholarships are titled “UVI Student Volunteer of the Year” and “UVI Volunteer of the Year.” Winners will be announced during the Afternoon on the Green activity.
UVI Student Volunteer of the Year Scholarship The recipient of the UVI Student Volunteer of the Year scholarship will receive a UVI tuition scholarship for 2010-2011. Applicants must be currently enrolled at UVI and expect to matriculate full-time during the 2010-2011 academic year. They must present a summary of a minimum of 50 hours of community service rendered at UVI or within the local community during the past 12 months and include letters verifying the service or contact information for the organizations served. There are no residency or grade point requirements.
UVI Volunteer of the Year Scholarship The recipient of the UVI Volunteer of the Year award will receive a scholarship worth $1000 that can be used towards tuition at UVI or with the UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center during the 2010-2011 academic year. The value of the scholarship may also be donated to a non-profit organization of the recipient’s choice within the community. The award is intended to recognize an individual who has contributed substantially (minimum of 50 hours during the past 12 months) to UVI or the local community. UVI faculty, administrators and staff are encouraged to submit their nominee for consideration for this award.

Council for Exceptional Children Seeks Nominations for Award; Feb. 20 Deadline The Student Chapter of the University of the Virgin Islands Council for Exceptional Children is seeking nominations for the group’s “Yes I Can” awards which will be presented on St. Thomas and St. Croix during the local celebration of National Down Syndrome Day and Exceptional Children’s Week from March 21 through 28.
The “Yes I Can” award recognizes students ages six through 25 with varying exceptionalities (gifted and special education) who excel in any of the following categories: academics, art, athletics, community service, extracurricular activities, independent living skills, advocacy and technology.
Parents or teachers with outstanding children or students are invited to make nominations. To qualify, students must currently live in the territory, have parental consent and fill in a nomination form. Nominations must be postmarked by Saturday, Feb. 20. No late nominations will be accepted. Free College Funding Workshops Scheduled on St. Thomas, St. Croix The College Access Challenge Grant Program at the University if the Virgin Islands will sponsor free workshops on how to secure scholarships and college funding on Thursday, Feb. 25, on St. Thomas and on Friday, Feb. 26, on St. Croix. The sessions, which will be led by award-winning trainer Marianne Ragins, are designed for students in grades nine through12 and their parents. They will show how rigorous research efforts, involvement in extracurricular activities, development of leadership potential, and special talents and hobbies, can all combine to help determine a student’s chances of securing aid for college. The workshops will feature where to look for scholarships, guidelines for writing winning personal essays and last minute strategies for getting college money
Ragins is the author of “Winning Scholarships for College” and “College Survival & Success Skills 101.” She also published “10 Steps for Using the Internet in Your Scholarship Search” and “The Scholarship and College Essay Planning Kit.” She is the founder and president of The Scholarship Workshop and sponsor of the Ragins/Braswell National Scholarship.
The St. Thomas workshop will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Conference Room B of the Windward Passage Hotel in Charlotte Amalie. March 1 is Deadline for Submission of VI-EPSCoR Incubator Grant Proposals The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) has announced its 2010 request for Incubator Grant proposals. VI-EPSCoR Incubator Grants support researchers in exploring new research directions related to the project focus on Integrated Caribbean Coastal Ecosystems (ICCE) as well as exploring research approaches for improving education and outreach outcomes.

Students Invited to Apply for Heyward G. Hill Scholarship; March 1 is Deadline UVI students have until Monday, March 1, to apply for the Heyward G. Hill Scholarship which is offered by the Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired (DACOR) Bacon House Foundation. The scholarship is opened to full-time students who are interested in the field of international affairs. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average, be at least a junior or senior and be an American citizen.

UVI’s CERC Advisory Board to Meet March 5-6 on St. Thomas The Caribbean Exploratory (NCHMD) Research Center (CERC) Advisory Board will meet from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on St. Thomas on Friday, March 5, and Saturday, March 6. The board is comprised of consultants from research-intensive mainland institutions of higher learning, as well as St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John community partners in education, public health and counseling.
