The finals of the 2009-10 Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League are now set. Regular season champions Softball Inc and Seaborne Stealers will meet on Thursday to determine this season’s king of slow pitch softball on St. Croix.
The Stealers, undefeated in this year’s playoffs, cemented their place in the finals by toppling Wyatt Heat 14-8 in a matchup of the playoffs’ last two undefeated teams. Softball Inc, on the other hand, had to come to the losers’ bracket after suffering an early playoff upset defeat.
This meant that they had to win two games on Tuesday to reach the finals. They defeated Cartel 15-9 in their first game of the night, and then knocked off Wyatt Heat, 11-6, in a battle of one-loss teams to reach the finals.
Stealers 14, Heat 8
The Stealers jumped out to a big early lead then had to hold off the late charge of Wyatt Heat. It was the Stealers with 14 runs on 14 hits and three errors, while the Heat finished with eight runs on 13 hits and two errors. Sam Ramos got the win on the hill for the Stealers, while Dexter Desouza got the loss.
Top batters for the winners were Owen Pimentel (3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs) and Ronald Schjang (2 for 3 with two home runs and five RBIs). For Wyatt Heat, Eric Perez was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Jose Berrios was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Softball Inc 15, Cartel 9
In game two on Tuesday, regular season champions Softball Inc showed the form that propelled them to the top of the league’s standing in defeating the Cartel 15-9 to ensure a second game on the night against the waiting Wyatt Heat. Softball Inc plated 15 runs on 14 hits with two errors, while the Cartel scored nine runs on 13 hits and three errors. The winning pitcher was Cody St. Pierre, while James Smith got the loss. Top batters for Softball Inc were St. Pierre (3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs) and (Leondro Reyes 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs). For the Cartel, Pedro Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Eddie Dunkirk was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Softball Inc 11, Wyatt Heat 6
In the nightcap, a matchup of one-loss teams to determine who will join the Stealers in the finals, Softball Inc outlasted Wyatt Heat 11-6. It was Softball Inc with 11 runs on 14 hits and three errors, while Wyatt Heat had six runs on 13 hits and two errors. The winning pitcher was St. Pierre, while Desouza got the loss for the Heat.
Top batters for the winners were Martin Charles (3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs) and St. Pierre (1 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs). For Wyatt Heat, Eric Perez was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Andre Ponce was 2 for 3 with a home run and one RBI.
So the league’s final game is now set with the teams that finished 1-2 in the league standings, Softball Inc and the Stealers, going at it beginning Thursday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park.
