District Announces Winners of 2010 Senior High Foreign Language Quiz Bowl

Jeanette Smith-Barry, superintendent for the St. Thomas-St. John District, has announced the winners of the 2010 Senior High Foreign Language Quiz Bowl held on March 5. The winners are as follows:

1st Place: Ivanna Eudora Kean High School
Team members: Ashanie Lockhart, Spanish I; Tiffany Smith, Spanish I; Jerell James, Spanish II; Karon Green, Spanish II
Alternates: Mekesha Connor, Spanish II
Coaches: Sra. Patricia Evans and Sra. Anita Flaharty
2nd Place: Charlotte Amalie High School
Team members: Delanni Matthew, Spanish I; Chardonnay Tyson, Spanish I; Simfoni Nibbs, Spanish II; Dmone Clendinen, Spanish II
Alternates: Rudisha Thomas, Spanish I
Coaches:Sra. Nancy Laguna-Luque and Sra. Ruth John-Baptiste
3rd Place: The Gifft Hill School
Team members: Careem Albert, Spanish I; Pace Knowles-Donnelly, Spanish I; Nicole Morrisette, Spanish II; Maddie Russell, Spanish II
Alternates:Mariah Scheer, Spanish I and Trichelle Gumbs, Spanish II
Coaches: Srta. Jill Darnely
Foreign Language Coordinator for the St. Thomas-St. John District Myrna van Beverhoudt said that students answered questions on general knowledge, grammar, math, vocabulary, translations and general Spanish knowledge. The purpose of the quiz bowl is to increase enthusiasm for and promote proficiency in the speaking of foreign languages throughout the district, according to van Beverhoudt.
The competition consisted of three games of 10 minutes each. The first game held between The Gifft Hill School and Charlotte Amalie High School ended with a final score of CAHS at 7 points and Gifft Hill at 4 points. The second game between the Eudora Kean and Charlotte Amalie High Schools ended with the score of 10 to 3 in favor of CAHS. These two schools faced off in the decisive championship game with Kean High School reigning victorious with 10 points over CAHS with 5 points.
“Congratulations to all of the student participants and their coaches, our outstanding judges and officials and Dr. Sharon McCollum, principal of the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, for the use of the facilities and their hospitality. Special thanks to our Foreign Language Teacher of the Year and Acting Assistant Principal at I.E.K.H.S. April Petrus, for all of her hard work in organizing the logistics at the school,” said van Beverhoudt.
