Carib JVs Beat CAHS in Tourney Action

The Caribs’ S. James is fouled on a drive to the hoop.

Two unbeaten teams remained after 13 preliminary games in the boys division of the Central High Junior Varsity Invitational tournament. By Saturday night, there was only one.

The host Central High Caribs took on and easily handled their long-time adversaries from across the pond, the Charlotte Amalie Chicken Hawks at the Ronald Charles Basketball Arena. The Caribs dominated all aspect of the game and turned in a 46-24 blowout which was not as close as the score indicated.

The host Caribs opened the contest on a 6-1 run and never trailed in the game. Led by five points from S. James and four form H. Mathews the Caribs held an 11-6 lead after one quarter.

The young Hawks would play much harder defensively in the second quarter and came to with two points of the lead on a couple of occasion, at 13-11 and 15-3. But the Caribs went on a 5-1 spurt to head into the locker room at the half leading 20-14.

The Caribs opened the second half with a tenacious trapping defense that visibly rattled the Hawks, who were outscored 14-1 to trail 34-14 at the end of three. Caribs R. Huggins had the hot hand and led his team with seven points in the third quarter.

Carib Coach Clement Heyliger emptied his bench to start the fourth and the Hawks were able to score some against this bunch, however the host’s backups were still able to outscore their opponents 12-10 for a final score of 46-24.

The Caribs were led offensively by Huggins who netted 12 points and James who dropped in 11. For the Hawks, A. Bazil netted seven points and K. Burner finished with six.

Tournament action was scheduled to continue Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when both boys and girls championship were to be decided.
