UVI Revises Academic Calendar for Spring Semester 2010 The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the revision of its Academic Calendar covering the 2010 spring semester. The calendar stipulates the schedule for all academic activities at the university – such as the registration, orientation, the start and end dates of classes, holidays, final exams and commencement – for the period from Jan. 4 through May 16, 2010.

The revised calendar begins on Jan. 4, the date UVI staff members will return from the holiday break. UVI faculty members return on Jan. 7. New student orientation and registration are set for Jan. 7. Advisement and late registration are scheduled for Jan. 8. Spring semester classes begin on Jan. 11. Modern Languages Area to Screen the Film ‘Casi Casi’ on Oct. 16 The Modern Language Area of UVI’s Division of Humanities and Social Studies will present the Spanish language film “Casi Casi” at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 16, in Chase Auditorium (B-110), on the St. Thomas campus. “Casi Casi” is a Puerto Rican comedy that runs 93 minutes. The UVI community is invited to attend. Admission is $1. Drinks and snacks will be given away. For details, contact Prof. Mike Anders at 693-1353. The next film in the series – the powerful French film “Au Revoir Les Enfants” – will be offered on Nov. 20.
World Food Day Activities Set Oct. 18 on St. Croix World Food Day activities will be held on the grounds of the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18. This year’s theme is: “Global Food Crisis: Opportunities, Responsibilities and Solutions.”
The Virgin Islands community is urged to come out and support junior high and senior high school students as they compete in the second World Food Day “Youth Super Chef Competition.” There will also be an open “Breadfruit Bonanza Cooking Competition” for the public. Entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. Categories are breads, desserts and side dishes. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries.
For the past 27 years, the UVI Cooperative Extension Service has taken the lead in providing educational workshops and interactive activities during World Food Day to encourage the planting of vegetables, fruits, and other food crops, thus, securing our own food security. Student Poetry Club Schedules ‘Mixed Media’ Event Oct. 18, on St. Thomas The Writer’s Block, UVI’s student poets club, will present a poetry merged with mixed media event at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Dining Pavilion on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. The presentation is titled "A Penny for Your Thoughts." The Writer’s Block invites the participation of musicians, dancers and visual artists willing to present impromptu performances or accompany poets. General admission is $5. Students with ID will pay $3. Proceeds will go to support the fight against breast cancer.
Members of The Writer’s Block will also participate in “The Poetry Corner” radio program on WSTA (1340-AM) at 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The listener call-in number is 774-1340. For details, send e-mail to thewritersblockvi@gmail.com.
West African Dance Classes for Students Offered Oct. 20 on St. Thomas West African dance classes – Ife Ni Jo – will be offered free to UVI students from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Dining Pavilion on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. A class originally scheduled for today (Thursday, Oct. 15) has been cancelled. The classes are sponsored by the Student Government Association’s Black Heritage Committee. Musicians and dancers willing to perform and those who wish to improve their fitness level while learning African culture and history are invited. VIUCEDD to Host 6th ‘Voices That Count’ Forum on Oct. 21 and 23 The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 6th annual “Voices That Count” legislative policy forum at the University of the Virgin Islands on Oct. 21, on St. Croix and Oct. 23, on St. Thomas.
“Voices that Count” is an annual, territory-wide forum that calls attention to the issues and concerns that people with disabilities face as they relate to education, public safety, accessibility and transportation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The theme for this year’s forum is “A Call for Action.”
On St. Croix, the forum will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21. It will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building. On St. Thomas the forum will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. It will be held in the Administration and Conference Center. St. Thomas participants are asked to park at UVI’s Sports and Fitness Center and use shuttle services that will be provided.
There is no fee for conference participants, but space is limited on both islands. The deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 16. UVI Computer Literacy Exam Dates Announced Dates and locations for UVI’s Fall Semester Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) have been announced for both campuses. The schedules listed below are also available under the Testing tab in the Registrar’s section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu.
St. Thomas CLE ScheduleExams on the St. Thomas campus will be administered from noon to 2 p.m. in room 103 of the Classroom Administration Building (CAB). CLE Tutorials Offered on St. Croix Campus Computer Literacy Tutorials are offered on from noon to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Room 131 of the North West Wing Building. No registration is required to take part in a tutorial.
Free Parent Advocacy Training Scheduled for Oct. 24 on St. Thomas A three-hour, parent advocacy training session is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Sugar Estate Head Start building. The training is designed for parents of children with disabilities. It is sponsored by HUGS VI, Head Start, the Disability Rights Center and the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).
The training will cover such topics as, the do’s and don’ts of advocating, how to be assertive and effective at your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting, strategies on how to help develop your child’s IEP, and ensuring a smooth transition of your child from high school to adult life after graduation.
The training is free and child care and refreshments will be provided. Parents must register for the event to ensure enough food and child care support staff. To register, please contact Shammi Carr at 693-1173 or scarr@uvi.edu.
President Hall to Address Legal Services of the V.I. Luncheon on Oct. 29 UVI President Dr. David Hall will be the keynote speaker at the 40th Anniversary Commemoration Luncheon for the Legal Services of the Virgin Islands, Inc., at noon on Thursday, Oct. 29. The luncheon will take place in the Great Hall, in the North West Wing on UVI’s St. Croix campus. Donations are $40. For more information contact Attorney Richard Austin at 773-2626.
Gruber Foundation to Present International Women’s Rights Prizes on Oct. 29 UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts will host the presentation of the 2009 Gruber Foundation’s International Women’s Rights Prize at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. Co-recipients of the prize are Teboho Molebatsi, of the Women’s Legal Centre of South Africa, and Leymah Gbowee, who spearheaded a women’s movement in Liberia.
The prize winners will make presentations on their work promoting peace and equality at a symposium scheduled as part of the awards presentation. UVI Trustee Judge Audrey Thomas will join Molebatsi and Gbowee in a panel discussion on women’s rights. Other panel participants will be Judge Patricia Steele, of the V.I. Superior Court’s Family Division, and Sandra Hodge Benjamin, representing the Family Resource Center. Admission to the presentation and panel discussion is free and the public is welcome to attend.
The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation, which is headquartered in the Virgin Islands, honors and encourages educational excellence, social justice and scientific achievements that better the human condition. A major focus of the Foundation’s philanthropy is its International Prize Program, created to recognize excellence in science and humanities by highlighting five fields that create a better world: Cosmology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Justice, and Women’s Rights. Educators Invited to V.I. Writing Project Conference on Literacy on Nov. 2 The Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP) invites educators to its first conference on literacy to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 2, at the Great Hall of the North West Wing building on UVI’s St. Croix campus.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jacqueline Jones Royster, a professor of English at Ohio State University. Dr. Royster will address the theme: “Building Literacy in an Age of Technology.” There will be two workshop sessions, where presenters will address and demonstrate the theme in eleven separate workshops.
The registration fee is $30 until October 25. After October 25, it will be $50

Application Form for Census 2010 Jobs Available from UVI Web Site The Virgin Islands Census Office has announced that a number of census jobs are available in association with Census 2010, which is being conducted under the auspices of UVI’s Eastern Caribbean Center. Local residents are needed to list addresses, pick up completed questionnaires and interview households. Enumerators and crew leaders, along with some clerks and office workers, are also needed.
An application form, which includes descriptions of the jobs available and qualifications that applicants must meet, is available from the Human Resources page of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu .

NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible. IASTED Computer Conferences Set in November The International Association of Science and Technology for Development (IASTED) will conduct two conferences in St. Thomas this November that could be of interest to computer science and other students at UVI. English Proficiency Examinations Scheduled for Nov. 5 UVI’s fall semester English Proficiency Examination (EPE) test is scheduled for 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. All UVI students must meet the English Proficiency Requirement in order to graduate. For more information, contact EPE Coordinator Dr. Trevor Parris at 693-1258.
On St. Thomas, the exam will be administered in Sports and Fitness Center, Rooms 221, 224 and 225.
On St. Croix, the exam will be administered in Evans Center, Rooms 302, 303, 305 and 308. EPE registration forms are available from the Registrar’s Office on St. Thomas (693-1150) and the Academic Affairs Office on St. Croix (692-4103).
EPE workshops are scheduled for the St. Croix campus from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, and Friday, Oct. 30, in Evans Center, Room 716.
