I am saddened and sickened by the verdict in the animal cruelty case. When it has taken over 3 years to bring this case to trail is it any wonder that a young witness may be fuzzy on dates?
The fact that it took so long to bring to trail shows that this animal cruelty law is being ignored and may well prove to be ineffectual in stopping these heinous types of behavior and crimes.
I hope that the Justice system will improve its efforts and that in the future these cases shall be properly documented and treated as the serious crimes that they are by the police and brought to trail in a speedy manner. We should all be ashamed.
While we are at it let's make sure we have proper laws against dog and cockfighting. I have heard some people say, "it's part of our culture". What kind of culture is as inhumane and barbaric to purposely train animals to maim and kill each other in the name of sport and gambling. Not my culture. I grew up here and am a 5th generation Virgin Islander. This cannot it be the culture of any decent human being.
I applaud the young witness and want him to know that he did the right thing. I hope that in spite of the disappointing outcome of this case, that other young people will take him as a shining example of compassion, caring and doing the right thing against the odds.
Shame on all of the people that would ignore and allow any type of cruelty to animals.
