Oct. 22, 2008 — The brothers of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity aim to help their local younger brothers grow into responsible men with a free seminar outlining their responsibility in reducing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
The seminar, Project Alpha, will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the University of the Virgin Islands' cafeteria. Presented by the Iota Sigma Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity in partnership with UVI, Project Alpha is geared toward males between the ages of 13 and 18.
Project Alpha is part of the local fraternity's national program, which aims to reduce the rate of adolescent sex and pregnancy, stressing the concept of abstinence as a personal choice while promoting the use of contraceptives to those who choose to be sexually active. The seminar goal is to increase the knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body and awareness of sexually transmitted diseases. It will clarify and emphasize the roles and responsibilities of fatherhood, and aims to reduce the rate of sexual abuse and violence among teens of color.
"This is an interesting seminar — very good for young men," said Gary Moore, Alpha Phi Alpha brother and organizer.
The last time they held the seminar organizers had to turn kids away, Moore said. They can accommodate 30.
"Some are repeats, but we want to open it up to others who didn't get a chance to attend the last seminar," Moore said. "We will take some walk-ins, too."
Topics in the seminar include "You and the Law" and "Relationships and Responsibility." Scheduled presenters will be a judge, police officer and representatives from the departments of Health and Justice, Moore said.
