Jan. 20, 2008 — Police on St. Croix are investigating the cause of a two-car collision that left a brother officer dead.
The accident occurred about 8 p.m. on Grove Road, according to police spokeswoman Melody Rames, who said the officer was killed on impact.
She said the police car was traveling north between Plaza Extra West and Lorraine Village Apartments. The other vehicle, a red truck, was traveling south.
Rames said it was too soon to speculate about how the accident occurred. She did say it was raining at the time.
A second officer was in the police vehicle. The driver of the truck, David Augustin, 45, of Estate Upper Love, was alone. He sustained head injuries.
"This tragedy has affected four families: the families of the drivers and the passenger and the V.I.P.D. family," Police Commissioner James McCall said Sunday night.
The officer, Akeem Newton, a 13-year veteran police officer, was married to another officer, Esther McCloud-Newton.
Rookie police officer Wayne Jeffers, 38, suffered a dislocated hip, chest and head injuries in the crash. He graduated from the Police Academy in November.
Jeffers and Augustin were both treated at the Juan F. Luis Hospital.
