Brief: Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of St. Croix Officer

Jan. 29, 2008 — Flags on all public buildings will fly at half-staff Friday and Saturday in honor of former St. Croix Police Officer Akeem Newton, who died earlier this month in a head-on vehicle collision while on duty.
"Akeem Newton was an exemplary officer who gave so much of himself in service to the people of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands," Gov. John deJongh Jr. said Tuesday. "As a member of the law-enforcement community, it is fitting that the flags in the territory be flown in honor of his life and in recognition of his many achievements in service to this community."
Newton's remains will be interred on St. Croix Saturday at the Victorious Believers Church in Estate Peter's Rest, Christiansted, following a 9 to 10:30 a.m. viewing and service at 11 a.m. A motorcade procession will proceed to the interment site at the Kingshill Cemetery. A formal service is also scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at Government House in Christiansted on Friday.
The flags will be lowered to half-mast starting at sunrise Friday and will be returned to full-mast at sunset Saturday.
