Sept. 6, 2007 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. and Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson Doty appeared at home plate at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., Wednesday to drum up tourism for the upcoming season.
"Just to be able to see the Virgin Islands splashed up there next to the Yankees, I think is great," deJongh said.
New Yorkers play a crucial role in V.I. tourism, bringing 90,000 visitors each year to the territory, the governor and Doty said.
They entered the field from a tunnel near the Yankees dugout and were introduced over the P.A. system along with former Yankee Horace Clark, a St. Croix native.
The promotional campaign included airline tickets and hotel accommodations in St. Croix, coupons for jewelry and other discounts only redeemable in the territory and a commemorative Yankees/V.I. sunglasses case.
The V.I. and Yankees have teamed up for the rest of the season, including any playoff games they may play, deJongh said. The Bronx bombers took one step closer to the playoffs Wednesday, beating the Seattle Mariners 10-2.
