WAPA BOARD OKS $14.5 MILLION KRUM BAY TURBINE

The Water And Power Authority Governing Board on Friday approved the awarding of a $14.5 million contract for the purchase and installation of a 23-megawatt gas turbine at the Krum Bay Power Plant on St. Thomas.
The contract for the turbine, designated Unit 22, has been awarded to Besco Inc.
Also approved by the board were the following expenditures:
— $4,829,422 to remove damaged material and reconstruct a 10.5-million gallon water tank and commission two 1.25-million gallon fuel tanks on St. Thomas.
— $353,138 to repair Unit 19, contracted to TAW Miami Service Center.
— $295,994 to purchase steam buckets for Unit 13 from Besco.
— $282,045 to make Unit 19 ground repairs, contracted to Besco.
— $75,000 to repair foundations at the Richmond Power Plant, contracted to Beller Group.
According to a WAPA release, the board at its meeting also received reports from its external auditing firm, KPMG, on its financial condition and from Southern Energy Co. on a 60-day study of WAPA operations.
