The opening reception for "Last Rites: A Photography Exhibition and Lecture Series" will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute, with the first lecture to follow at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
The show and lectures focus on cemeteries and burial traditions in the Virgin Islands, and speakers Friday include Ruth Moolenaar, Cleone Creque, Ulla Muller, Elmira Farrell and Katina Coulianos-Sell. The institute's Myron Jackson, director of historic preservation, will moderate.
"Last Rites" is made possible with support from Banco Popular of the Virgin Islands, Chase Manhattan Bank, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. Frames of Mind, Blazing Photos, and Cruz Bay Photo Center donated the competition prizes.
The Institute is located at 5-6 Kongens Gade (at Roosevelt Park). The exhibition runs until Dec. 8. The Institute is open from 8 a.m until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information please call 774-9537 or 776-8605
