SBDC OFFERS HELP 'BEYOND BASIC ESTATE PLANNING'

Feb. 17, 2003 – The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct its small business seminars on "Beyond Basic Estate Planning" Thursday, Feb. 20.
The St. Thomas session will be from 10 to noon at the SBDC training facility at the second floor of the east wing, Nisky Center. On St. John the seminar will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the V.I. Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay. Attorney Linda Baxter is the presenter.
Admission to each seminar is $20. There is a $5 discount if you pre-register and pay by Tuesday, Feb. 18. Admission for UVI faculty, staff and students is free, although they must pre-register.
Topics include: special tax laws affecting native and naturalized Virgin Islanders only, tax law changes, taxable life insurance, how to avoid death taxes and probate in each state where property is held. More topics include heritage trust to protect "family property" through generations; debunking the myth that "A Will is Enough,' keeping business partners from causing problems, using charitable giving, perils of joint ownership, court and attorney fees, health-care power of attorney and planning for disabled family members.
Average probate for St. Thomas is 12 to 15 years and 6 to 10 years for St. Croix, the release noted, while average probate for states in the United States in which property is held is 2 1/2 years.
