July 3, 2004 – St. John's July 4th Celebration heads into its finale this weekend with a slew of events.
Events Saturday, Cultural Day, begin at 1 p.m. in Cruz Bay Park, where vendors will sell crafts and food.
On Sunday, the committee will hold a beach party at Oppenheimer Beach, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food and drinks will be sold.
J'ouvert starts at 4 a.m. Monday at the National Park ball field. Hundreds of participants are expected to follow their favorite bands through Cruz Bay.
The parade through Cruz Bay begins at 11 a.m. at the National Park.
The July 4th Celebration wraps up with fireworks, beginning at 9 p.m., over Cruz Bay Harbor on Monday.
This Village, named in honor of Lucy Smith-Prince, will remain open every night through Monday.
St. John's July 4th Celebration has its roots in Independence Day. In the early years, activities on the one-day event focused on things like greased-pole contests, donkey races and groups of children parading.
Today, the event has grown to include the arrival of thousands of people from St. Thomas who join the island's 4,000 residents for good times.
