Feb. 22, 2008 – The annual St. Thomas-St. John Foreign Language Cultural Showcase will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, April 12, at the Tutu Park Mall. This year's theme is "You Have the World on a String with Foreign Languages." It will focus on student accomplishments in the area of cultural awareness in their language of study, and it will promote the study of foreign languages, according to a press release from the Department of Education.
"This is our fifth year and, as always, we are very excited about coordinating and putting on the Foreign Languages Showcase. All public, private and parochial schools with foreign language programs are invited to participate in the showcase and we look forward to students' work and participation," said Myrna V. van Beverhoudt, foreign languages coordinator.
The areas to be showcased and judged include: Posters – "Copying the French and Spanish Masters" and "Theme Posters." Students' work may also be entered in the category of projects called "Wonders of the Foreign Language World." In this particular section, students produce replicas of outstanding architectural feats of the Spanish or French world (i.e., the pyramids of Mexico, the Louvre in France). Schools are also invited to bring their best original piñatas to be judged. They should be creative and include a cavity for candy, though they should not be filled with candy. Each school may enter no more than four entries per category, per school (i.e., a maximum of 16 entries per school). The entries must be turned in to the District foreign language coordinator on or before Thursday, April 10. Trophies will be awarded for the winners of the first, second and third places in each category in each division (elementary: K-6 and secondary: 7-12).
