Four Top Quelbe Bands on One Night at Reichhold

The territory's top quelbe bands will play at the Reichhold Center for the Arts in early February in a performance highlighting the history and importance of the genre.
The concert, called "Playing Ring: A Musical Journey in Quelbe," is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4.
Participating bands include Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights, Jamsie Brewster, Koko and the Sunshine Band, and the Lashing Dogs from Tortola. The St. Thomas Heritage Dancers will perform quadrille dancing.
Quelbe, the official music of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is a mixture of bamboula rhythms, chants, cariso songs and more. It was originally performed by self-taught musicians who played on handmade instruments.
"This musical is going to be a very unique way of telling the history of quelbe music, which is such a rich part of Virgin Islands culture," Pamela Sanes, Reichhold Center's co-interim director, said in a press release.
The event will include a craft fair with traditional Caribbean foods, arts and more.
For tickets and more information, call the Reichhold Center box office at 693-1559. Tickets are also available at Parrot Fish, Modern Music (Havensight), Krystal and Gifts Galore, Connections (St. John) and the University of the Virgin Islands bookstore.
