In order to encourage participation in the celebration of Carnival, Gov. John de Jongh Jr. signed a proclamation earlier this week granting leave to nonessential government employees as follows:
In St. Thomas-St. John district only:
• Wednesday, April 25 – Food, Arts and Crafts Fair Day
12 noon to 5 p.m.
• Thursday, April 26 – J’ouvert
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
And for nonessential government employees territorywide:
• Friday, April 27 – Children’s Parade Day
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“During this historical and festive season, hundreds of families, friends, visitors and supporters will be visiting the territory to enjoy and partake in the our cultural activities, and the sights and sounds of Carnival,” de Jongh said.
“This additional celebration provides a tremendous financial boost to our economy and helps to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Carnival and our culture.”

"John de Jongh Jr. signed a proclamation earlier this week granting leave to nonessential government employees." Does that mean "leave" for them all?
If all these people are "non-essential" why do they even work for the Government?
Our governor and senators declare we are CASH strapped in The VI but that doesn't stop them spending money we don't have on the non-essential, such as leaves for Carnival and all those other paid holidays.
Way to go, guys!
Let's balance that budget some more! Sorry! I forgot that there is no budget just raised taxes and high prices, waste, misuse, misspending, mismanagement and theft of our taxpayer dollar.
Yea! Happy Carnival! Especially to all the senators whose accommodations we shall be paying for to enjoy carnival!
"If all these people are "non-essential" why do they even work for the Government?" Because the majority of them are lazy, talentless, takers who could not earn a serious living on their own without the government feeding and providing for them. Sad. You'd think that as an adult one would have more self respect and character than that. You'd think that but, in this case, you'd be wrong. Party on!

First of all, non-essential means employees that are not on call services. Teachers are considered non-essential, so are you saying they are not needed? Second, if you lay off a lot of the government employees since you think they are not needed then our economy would be worse than it is now. Most of the tax revenues comes from government employees. They are the ones that buy cars, groceries, pay bills, buy lunch, pay taxes.....etc. They are the majority whom contributes to our local businesses in turn our economy.
Think about it.
The less jobs available the worst the economy. The impact of Hovensa has already impacted our economy in a negative way. Less of the children of the HOVENSA's workers are going to private schools, which means these private schools will be struggling to meet ends needs and thus a close down. Which also means less taxes are being paid into our economy. There are so many things I can talk about here forever. Get a grip people and support the government employees to keep their jobs. If their were to be a massive layoff of government employees it will be all hell break loose. Not to mention the increase in crime.
SMH!!!!!
You can imagine just how disgusted and embarrassed the people of the Virgin Islands are knowing that the Governor seems to be totally emersed in ripping off the people's treasury, lying, cheating, and mis-governing. And his wife is the proud employee of a multiple CHILD SEX OFFENDER!!!!!!!!! Oh it's a great place to live! Thieves and perverts!
well this is nothing new! The bottom line if you don't want to live with ''thiefes and perverts'' MOVE! I did.born and raised there, left for miltary service, retired came home, work in private industry and left and have never looked back! I just sold my property and home it took over 8 months to close! In the States a normal closing would take less than a month! So folks tell me wow how cool, you can retire there! I say are you crazy?? I don't need stress and stupidity in my old age! So many of you complain and moan, but remember you get what you vote for! you voted those clowns in,so deal with it!
