Two troupes representing the largest resorts on St. John won top honors from judges of the St. John Fourth of July Parade. St. John Westin Resort and Caneel Bay Resort were among the host island entries that distinguished themselves with color style and performance at the festival parade.
Westin, celebrating 20 years of serving St. John’s travel market, took first place. Caneel followed as the runners up.
The Love City Pan Dragons won second place in the sixth category which included troupes, floupes, mocko jumbies, majorettes and traditional. Pan Around the Neck, a marching troupe of steel drummers, won first place.
Tradition bearer Chester Brady, also known as the Mighty Groover, won third place as the parade’s one and only individual entry.
St. John Majorettes placed third in the highly competitive category for baton twirlers. St. Thomas Majorettes won top honors. Sebastian Majorettes came in second.
First and second place winners in the Traditional category held a special meaning for those whose memories hearken back to the modern revival of Virgin Islands Carnival on St. Thomas. Shaka Zulu troupe, a modernized version of the Zulus took first. Their age old rivals, the Traditional Indians, won second.
There was one entry for stilt walking mocko jumbies. Real Mas and Dem Jumbies were named the winners.
