18-Year-Old Killed in Sub Base Shooting

One young man was killed and another injured when shooting broke out during a fight early Sunday in Sub Base, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The victim was identified by family members as 18-year-old Akil Grieg Jr. His death was the 10th homicide on St. Thomas since the beginning of the year, the 17th in the territory.

According to police, officers were dispatched at 2:19 a.m. Sunday when the 911 center received a report of a fight in progress in the parking lot of Arian’s Nightclub in Sub Base. A second call moments later reported that shots had broken out and victims were on the ground.

Witnesses told the Source that the fight began inside the club, and security had escorted the fighting parties outside. A while later shots rang out in a dark section of the club’s parking lot. The nightclub is located next door to Arian’s Restaurant, which is owned and operated by former senator Stephen Smokey Frett.

At the scene, officers found that one gunshot victim was being transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center via private vehicle. second gunshot victim was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center via ambulance.

Grieg suffered multiple shots about the body. He died of his injuries and was declared dead at the hospital

The second gunshot victim was identified as a 26 year-old male who was treated at the Schneider Regional Medical Center for multiple gunshot wounds about his body. As of late Sunday morning he was in stable condition at the hospital.

The VIPD urged anyone with information to call police at 340-774-2211, the Homicide Task Force at 340-714-5554 or 340-714-5617, the 911 emergency call center, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers V.I., at 1-800-222-8477.

At the time of the shooting several local bands were performing inside the club, bands which draw young audiences, including two bands from St. Croix, Kylo and the Stylee Band. The event was halted early Sunday after the shooting.
