The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center is in a financial crisis. The cost of running the shelter with the large intake of animals has become more than we can maintain. As the only source of animal control on the island, it is critical for us to keep our doors open. Every time our staff leaves the shelter to pick up an animal, it costs the center $20 per trip. The shelter picks up 15-20 animals a day. It costs approximately $10 per day per animal for food and shelter.
The small amount of money received from the government for animal control does not cover the costs to control the stray animal population on St. Croix. The shelter can no longer be operated in this financial position. We need the community’s help. The shelter needs volunteers to help at the shelter and with fund-raising events. It desperately needs donations and people in the community to be foster parents, while actively seeking adoptions for animals.
St. Croix Animal Welfare Center wants animal owners to be more responsible and ensure their pets are spayed and neutered, as there are many puppies and kittens being put down at the shelter due to lack of space and funding. The center will be launching a membership drive very shortly. Please follow it on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/StCroixAnimalWelfareCenter or the Web site: http://www.stcroixawc.org/. Those wishing to assist may contact The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center at 778-1650.
