The roadway on Strand Street between Kings Cross and Queens Cross streets in Christiansted will be closed for construction Monday throgh Friday, but the sidewalk and entrances to all stores and business will remain open to accomodate holiday shopping and activities, the V.I. Water and Power Authority announced Sunday.
Work on the Christiansted Phase II Underground project resumes Monday. Signage has been placed to indicate the road closure and detours, and flaggers will be present for informational purposes, the WAPA statement said.
Contractors will continue to work with heavy machinery, lay conduits and cover trenches, according to WAPA.
Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. WAPA and J. Benton Construction, LLC, said they will make every effort possible to minimize inconvenience to foot and vehicular traffic in Christiansted and to provide easy access to all offices and businesses during their operating hours.
The public parking lot on Strand Street will be open and can be accessed by the entrance at the King Cross Street intersection. Parking will be free at the public lot to anyone who presents a validated and dated receipt from a Christiansted town business to the parking lot attendant from Dec. 10 through Jan. 18. Flaggers will also allow access, as possible, to the private parking lot on Strand Street between King Cross and Queen Cross Streets during the week.
The Christiansted Underground project is a critical component of WAPA’s larger underground mitigation plan for the Virgin Islands. The project is expected to provide a significant increase in service reliability in the town area and reduce the destruction and lengthy restoration process of Christiansted’s electrical distribution system in the event of a hurricane or other major events, WAPA said.
