Marilyn (Lynn) Thompson, 82, passed away on May 28 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. Born on Jan. 14, 1929 in Boston, Mass., to Walter and Dorothy Myers, she was raised in Scarsdale, NY. She was married to John Thompson, former editor of the Virgin Islands Daily News, for 61 years. Together they raised six children and lived in many locations from rural Connecticut to suburban New York City to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
While raising her boisterous children, she also worked as a real estate agent, for various island hopping airlines in the Caribbean and, until she retired in 1994 in the membership department at BoatUS. Lynn was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church where she served on the altar guild for many years. She also volunteered for many years with the senior program at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister Midge Shaw of Vero Beach, Florida; her children Dave and his wife Jill; Meg and her husband Gary; Chris, Laurie, Patti and Jean. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Bammie”: Jackie Trimmer, Ian Thompson, Matt Centers, Davey Centers, Sarah Pemberton and Becca Pemberton; and her nieces Chrissie McGuire and Julie Carney. Other survivors include many special friends who she took under her wing and considered family. Lynn was an avid reader and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by family and friends, especially at the beach.
Her funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart Association in her memory.
