During the holiday season, Police Commissioner Novelle E. Francis Jr. reminds parents, guardians and minors of the curfew laws that are presently in place in the Virgin Islands. The curfew law is an effective method to safe guard minors against criminal activities. Here are a few guidelines.
· Children under the age of 16 must be off the streets or highways before 10 p.m. unless accompanied by an adult legally responsible for the child’s behavior
· Unsupervised minors can be taken into custody by the police and held until they are released to their parents or guardians
· A minor who violates the curfew law can be required to perform community service
· A parent or legal guardian can have charges filed against them if a minor continues to violate the curfew law and further action may be taken against the minor and their parents in court of law
· And remember, youth over the age of 16 can be on the streets after 10 p.m. but are not allowed in any establishments that serve alcohol
· In the Virgin Islands the legal drinking age is 18. All establishments selling or serving alcohol are required by law to ask for identification that shows proof of age
It is important, especially during the holiday season, to be aware of the curfew laws that are set in place for the community’s protection. Following these guidelines will help families and the community in general to have a safer, more joyous holiday season.
