Murder Suspect Arrested Hours After Shooting

Lorn Vern Henley was arrested Saturday hours after an early morning shooting in which 22-year-old Aquil Abdullah died.

Abdullah was shot multiple times and died at the scene minutes before 4 a.m. Saturday. Jeffroy Jeffers was also injured in the incident, being shot in his right foot.

Police arrested the 18-year-old Henley at 11:30 a.m. Saturday after he was positively identified by witnesses as one of the people who aided another man in the shooting of both victims. He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, unauthorized possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment and possession of ammunition.

Henley retained an attorney and declined to make a statement after he was advised of his constitutional rights.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot near Club Jaguars, which is located above Wendy’s at Mandela Circle. When police arrived on the scene along with emergency medical technicians Abdullah was unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The second victim, Jeffers, was shot on his right foot. Abdullah died at the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim was involved in an altercation with one or more peeople while standing in the parking lot and was shot several times.

Henley was held without bail and turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing.

Assistant Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman congratulated the officers on the swift arrest of the suspect and assured the community that the case is still under investigation.
