St. Thomas’ Master Deposit Wins First Leg of V.I. Triple Crown

Master Deposit and Slevin were Sunday’s big winners at the Randal “Doc” James racetrack during the Virgin Islands – Puerto Rican Friendship Day weekend. Master Deposit took the opening leg of the native-bred Triple Crown in wire-to-wire fashion, while St. Croix champ, Slevin, rolled over Gato Paso in the day’s co-feature.

Master Deposit sped to the lead at the break and did not look back. The three-year old filly has been impressive since her debut March 4, winning four out of five career starts.

She did have to withstand a late charge from rising star, Hanna Boss, to prevail by half of a length.

Master Deposit negotiated the one mile distance in 1:42.2. Cruzan Emerald rallied for third.

In the day’s co-featured 1-1/16 miles 10th race, Slevin made easy work of Gato Paso. The race was reduced to two entries after Congo was scratched due to illness.

At the break, the speedy Gato Paso went straight to the lead and took the small field by the grand stand and into the back stretch two lengths ahead. At about the four furlongs marker, at the middle of the backstretch, Slevin appeared to have had enough, and when jockey Christian Soto Jr. asked him for more, he responded by quickly reeling in Gato Paso and blew by around the far turn.

The race was over at that point as Soto was able to draw clear and cruised to an easy two and a half lengths victory at the wire. Slevin negotiated the 1-1/16 miles race in a not too shabby, 1:43.23.
