Suspect Arrested in Savan Murder

Lakeel O. Wade was arrested Friday and charged with murder in connection with the Sept. 7 shooting death of Andre J. Tannis, the V.I. Police Department reported.

Tannis was shot several times and later collapsed on Gamble Gade.

The 22-year-old Wade was arrested by members of the Major Crimes unit at about 1 p.m. Friday. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, four counts of unauthorized use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and aiding and abetting.

Police said witnesses identified Wade as the person who shot and killed Tanis.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted on the day of the shooting, a few minutes before midnight on Sept. 7 police were notified of a shooting victim. A man, later identified as 40-year-old Andre J. Tanis, a resident of Savan, was found lying on Gamble Gade with gunshot wounds to the right side of his body. An ambulance took Tanis to the Schneider Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Police said at the time Tanis was near the Friendly Bar in Savan when several shots were fired at him. He was seen running from the area and later collapsed on Gamble Gade.

Wade was held on a $500,000 bail and remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his court appearance.
