Contrary to rumors circulating around St. Thomas that police officers do not have ticket books and are not writing tickets, officers do have ticket books and will write traffic tickets when warranted, St. Thomas/St. John /Water Island Police Chief Darren Foy said Wednesday in a press release.

“This is completely untrue, and for anyone to advise motorists to break the law is irresponsible,” Foy said.

He said that although the Superior Court currently does not have ticket books to give St. Thomas officers, the officers have reserve ticket books and are not in danger of running out of the reserves. Foy also reminded the community that ticket books can be sent from St. Croix or St. John for St. Thomas officers if necessary.

Foy noted that traffic enforcement officers were active during this past weekend where several persons were ticketed for drunken driving and other violations.

He advised the community that traffic check points will be in force throughout the month and beyond.

“Traffic enforcement officers are active every day this week enforcing the tint law, DUI and other traffic infractions,” Foy said.

He asked the public to be patient when encountering these checkpoints, and to keep in mind the actions officers take regarding traffic rules are for the protection of all residents and visitors.

“Laws against driving over the speed limit, using a cell phone without an earpiece, texting while driving and not obeying posted signs are all in effect to protect the public. Violating these laws can result in the injury or death of another person or yourself,” Foy said.
