On Thursday, April 25, the St. Thomas community was enjoying J'Ouvert when the celebration was shattered by gunshots which injured three people. Public safety officials immediately canceled the remainder of J'Ouvert.

The 10th annual Beach to Beach Power Swim is set for Sunday on St. John and, with the entries capped at 300, time is running out to register. Last year, 283 swimmers raised $20,000.

Shooting Claims life of 18-year-old Vasheo Donastorg

According to police, Vasheo Donastorg was washing his car outside his home on Lime Street when shots rang out Monday evening, killing the 18-year-old. Police are urging anyone with information to call.

Hebrew Congregation Honors Seven Students on M.L. King Jr. Day

     The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas will again observe Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday with a special service honoring seven high school students whose lives exemplify his teachings.  The ceremony will be part of the Jan. 15th Erev Shabbat service, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to the service and to a reception at Lilienfeld House, across from the synagogue, after the service.
     The seven students to be honored are:

     Hannah Marie Charles            Sts. Peter and Paul School
Kai Bartlette                           V.I. Montessori School
Aleece Damara Evans             All Saints School
Barndon Rhymer                    Ivanna Eudora Kean High
Semone Rey                            Seventh-day Adventist School
Noor Suid                               Antilles School
     
     All seven were nominated for the award by their principals or guidance counselors. In addition to the recognition, each student will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and a special book, "Shared Dreams, Martin Luther King and the Jewish Community.”
      Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. will be this year’s guest speaker.
