HOPE Inc. Promotes National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

March 5, 2009 – Hope Inc. will recognize March 10 as National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to raise awareness of the impact that HIV is having on women and girls in the Virgin Islands. The 2009 theme is "HIV Is Right Here at Home. Get Tested. Know Your Status."
In the V.I., more men than women have HIV, however, women are catching up. Based on the number of new HIV infections in women, they may soon outnumber men infected with the virus. Women most at risk are women of color, those with multiple sex partners and those of low socio-economic status.
In recognition of Awareness Day, HOPE Inc. will host a month-long "Learn to Stay Safe While Having Fun" bounce-back-card campaign. Females who present a bounce back card at the time of service will receive an incentive and the opportunity to take part in any of HOPE's many HIV prevention services designed to inform and educate women at risk.
Women interested in participating in any of the organization's programs can obtain cards at selected location on St. Thomas and St. John including, but not limited to, Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center on St. John and HOPE's office on Dronningens Gade, next to L&C Milliner.
