Relay for Life Set to Benefit American Cancer Society on Feb. 11-12
The American Cancer Society's volunteers on St. John have started the new year with enthusiasm and commitment for their upcoming Relay for Life on Feb. 11 and 12 at the Winston Wells Ballfield.
Relay for Life represents a worldwide movement of 23 countries including the United States that are educating and raising funds for the fight against cancer through prevention, early detection, patient services, research and advocacy. Specifically, the dollars raised at the American Cancer St. Thomas-St. John Unit provides the community with services such as mammograms and financial assistance for patients according to Dr. Lillian Santos, CEO for the American Cancer Society of PR and USVI. “Providing guidance and updated information on community and other resources available is also part of ACS role, since we understand how expensive treatment can be, and we can assist in partnering with other organizations that can also help a patient in their fight against cancer," she said.
Last year, the St. John made the event the recipient of a National Award of "Rookie of the Year 2011."
Relay for Life would like everyone to consider being part of an overnight experience they will never forget. For information on how to register your team, please call Christine at 775-5373 on St Thomas or Alicia Maynard on St. Croix at 778-2882.
