Positive Gone Negative

The impending recall of Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. as proposed by Senator Terrance “Positive” Nelson, aka “Negative Nelson” has now come to a point which cries for the response exposing the Senator for the hypocrite that he is. For too long our approach of “taking the high road” by not responding to the baseless accusations from a miserable few led by Nelson, who have nothing positive to contribute to the economic development of this Territory and improve the quality of life of the people must stop!

My fellow Virgin Islanders, we must ask: Is Senator “Positive Gone Negative” Nelson’s initiative to recall the Governor his response to our current economic crisis? If so, it reflects his total lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation and his incompetence, while parading his so called accounting background as a justification for his action. Moreover, I question the validity of his “degree” given the lack of appreciation for the fiscal challenges currently facing this government. He may have gone to school, but he certainly did not go to class.

His personal attacks and disrespectful approaches to the Chief Executives of the Virgin Islands are well documented, and by extension, they are likewise personal attacks and disrespectful approaches to the people who duly elected them to office. What’s more, the Senator should be reminded of the old adage that “people with glass houses should not throw stones.”

Senator “Positive Nelson Gone Negative” must also be reminded of his self interest legislation, which amended the long-standing policy designed to provide tax payer funded scholarships, and encourage our students to attend our local institution of higher learning, U.V.I. This amendment benefited his son, who is now attending an offshore university of his choice, thus enriching the coffers of another institution instead of U.V.I. at taxpayers’ expense. This is one example of the Senator’s hypocrisy. While he often accuses the Governor of enriching himself and friends at taxpayer’s expense he continues to hide behind his concern for the people and changes public policy for personal gain. What dictates that you are of moral standing and fiber to belittle Governor de Jongh? What meaningful and viable solutions have you introduced during your tenure to ameliorate the current fiscal and economic challenges afflicting the Territory? I contend that you have not made any "Positive" contributions!!!

Unfortunately for us, your actions are not commensurate with the level of leadership required for a representative of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands at all. Your character and integrity are not unimpeachable and leave much to be desired. Your motives are clearly those of personal and political gain. None of your actions demonstrate effective results.

Allow me to share just a few of the "Positive" results of the de Jongh administration. I understand that you may be a bit short sighted, some of which you voted against. These initiatives include, but are not limited to:

— Home Depot which is fully operational and employs many local residents.

— Cruise ships now grace the Frederiksted pier regularly, infusing not only new income into our coffers but also exposes our beauty and treasures to the rest of the world, thus providing avenues for return guests and additional income.

— DIAGEO is producing rum ahead of schedule resulting in a marked increase in rum rebates available to the Territory. It must also be noted that as a result of Governor de Jongh’s negotiating skills, DIAGEO even advanced funds to the VI Treasury prior to the first gallon of rum produced.

Governor de Jongh also advanced additional initiatives, many already being implemented. Loans have been made available to small businesses. VIPD has been deployed on increased foot patrol. Most notably, our future is being secured by raising the level of education afforded to our youth.

Senator Nelson, perhaps it is time to retire your moniker “Positive” as you have done nothing but negative. Please also be aware that while you are considering recalling the Governor, Senator “NEGATIVE” Nelson, we are considering recalling YOU!!!

We will remember in November.

Sincerely,

Jamil Ali
