VIWMA Apologizes for Solid Waste Collection Delays

The V.I. Waste Management Authority apologizes to the St. Thomas community for the current trash overflow situation occurring in the Charlotte Amalie area.
One of the contracted haulers had been experiencing mechanical difficulties with their equipment, affecting receptacle and six- and eight-yard bin collections in the Savan, Frenchtown, Downtown Vendor’s Plaza, Seventh Day Street, Glass Bottle Alley, the 1st through 10th Streets, Street Sugar Estate, Veteran’s Drive in the vicinity of the Waterfront, Main Street, Goat Street, Ross Estate Housing in Polyberg, Estate Thomas behind Oswald Harris Court, Mahogany Estate, and portions of Contant behind the carwash. This matter has been resolved as of Tuesday and the affected areas will be collected and cleaned expeditiously.
A second contractor is currently experiencing equipment challenges and this is impacting the Northside, Bordeaux, and Smith Bay areas.
The VI Waste Management Authority is also experiencing mechanical failures of two of its collection trucks. The areas covered by the authority are still being serviced on a daily but delayed schedule.
The authority’s Solid Waste Division is currently working with our staff and other contracted haulers to address this situation in a timely manner.
The authority apologizes for this inconvenience and will be working diligently to address the overflow and clean up the affected areas. It is anticipated that scheduled collections will resume in the affected areas shortly.
Residents are asked to utilize the larger bin sites or the Bovoni Landfill for disposal whenever possible, especially during this time, and are reminded that it is illegal to dispose of bulk waste, such as furniture, and white goods, such as appliances, at the bin sites.
