Arts Alive Presents Grammy Winner Mark O’Conner
Arts Alive will host two-time Grammy winner Mark O’Conner who will give a concert of contemporary and classic hot swing jazz hits at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at Tillett Gardens. He will appear with his band featuring vocalist Tamar Korn. Tickets are $35.
The multifaceted Mark O’Conner is a product of America’s rich aural folk tradition, who also studied both classical and flamenco music in his formative years. His creative journey began in the 1940s at the feet of American folk fiddler Benny Thomasson and French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. O’Connor grew to shape these influences as well as many others into a new American Classical music, perpetuating his vision of an American School of string playing.

“The Fiddle Concerto,” has become the most-performed violin concerto composed in the last 40 years. In April 2000, he premiered his fourth violin concerto “The American Seasons: Seasons of an American Life,” at Troy Music Hall in Troy, N.Y. In 2001, he received a Grammy Award for his release, “Appalachian Journey,” and in 2007, he received a commission from 15 symphony orchestras to compose his “Americana Symphony” recorded by the Baltimore Symphony in 2008.
One of the most recorded violinists in many genres, O’Connor has recorded with artists including Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, and has performed his compositions in concert at The White House, the Presidential Inauguration Celebration and the ceremonies of Atlanta’s Centennial of Atlanta’s Centennial
Olympic Games for which he composed “Olympic Reel.” He has been featured on major network television shows, and past appearances include “CBS Sunday Morning,” “Great Performances” on PBS, and the “Kennedy Center Honors.”
