March 28, 2008 — Celebrate the 91st anniversary of the territory's transformation from the Danish West Indies to the U.S. Virgin Islands Monday on St. Thomas.
"By coming together each year to mark this occasion, we shape a greater awareness of our Danish heritage," Gov. John deJongh Jr. said in announcing the schedule of events for the Transfer Day observance. "Transfer day provides us the opportunity to pay tribute to the special relationship which exists between Denmark and the U.S. Virgin Islands, a relationship steeped in historical, cultural and educational programs and exchanges."
Ceremonies begin at 3 p.m., on the grounds of the V.I. Legislature and will feature remarks from deJongh and other dignitaries, musical selections and the symbolic lowering of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, and the raising of the American flag.
DeJongh and Lt. Governor Gregory Francis invite the public to a Grand Gospel Gala at Emancipation Garden Sunday, the day before Transfer Day.
The concert, which begins at 3 p.m., will feature many gospel choirs, including the Seventh Day Adventist Unlimited Praise, Unified Prayze, American Legion Chorale, Caribbean Chorale, Global Life Anointed Dancers, Salvation Army Choir, Faith Alive In Christ Choir, New Vision Youth Choir, Christ Church Methodist Youth Choir, BCB Middle School Choir, Ivanna Eudora Kean High Choir, Leonard Dober School Choir and Orchestra, Assembly of God and Word of Faith International Choir.
