MUSIC MAN ARCHIE THOMAS LEAVES A LEGACY

"Blow, Archie, Blow" went the lyrics of one of the Virgin Islands' most renowned songs, a trademark of the Archie Thomas Band. "It's only the sax I play professionally," he said once in an interview, "but I can teach even what I can't play." Thomas, who died on Sunday, July 14, did a lot of playing and a lot of teaching, leaving a lot of people with fond memories of his music, and many with the skills to carry it on.

COURTS REJECT EMBEZZLEMENT FIGURE'S APPEALS

Lydia Magras, one of two St. Thomas women convicted in connection with the embezzlement of about $1.7 million from a Little Switzerland store, is back in custody, having lost appeals before the appellate division of U.S. District Court and the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Improvements to the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve on St. Croix inched a bit closer to reality on Wednesday with passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of a bill sponsored by Delegate Donna M. Christensen that appropriates $1.5 million to pay for part of a parcel of land adjacent to the park.

With nine majority senators and 10 votes -- a two-thirds majority -- required for an override, the measure failed.
