Sandra Harty, president of the Virgin Islands Insurance Association (VIIA), advises people not to wait until the peak of the 2021 season to review their insurance policies:
“It’s only mid-July and we have already had our first storm warning of the year. Plus, if you wait until a storm threatens and you need to buy or increase coverage, it will likely be too late. Review your coverage now and contact your insurance professional if you have any questions. The 2021 Hurricane Season is predicted by (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) NOAA to be another active season.
“Property owners should review their coverage annually, but make adjustments as soon as they are needed. For example, if you have made improvements to your home or built an addition, you should make changes to your coverage right away,” said Harty.
“We understand that insurance is not everyone’s favorite topic, but as we enter what is predicted to be another active hurricane season, and as we get daily earthquake notifications from VITEMA,
the VIIA and its members want to encourage every insurance consumer to take an active interest in understanding insurance. Your insurance professional will be more than happy to work with you.”
The VIIA is an association of local insurance agents, brokers, insurance adjusters and insurers whose role, among others, includes educating the public on the benefits to be derived from insurance. The 22-member organization employs over 200 individuals who have chosen a career in the insurance industry to help community members protect their investment in their homes and businesses for the overall benefit of the Virgin Islands.
Sandra Harty was elected president in March of 2020. Other officers of the association include John Harper, vice president; Sheri Charles, treasurer; Jessica Grell, secretary; other members of the board of directors include Sue Boland, Mark Braddell and Tami Noel.
