A new exhibit called the “Mango Market” will be unveiled at the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum this summer. The exhibit, sponsored by Alpine Securities, will become the largest interactive piece for the museum and will allow children to experience simulated farming of a beloved fruit of Virgin Islanders — the mango! Alpine’s VI Children’s Museum Mural Contest is being held to select and highlight a local artist to complement the new exhibit.
Children will be able to pick toy mangoes from a lifelike mango tree, weigh and purchase their produce at a digital cash register at the checkout counter, among other activities. There will be both interactive moving pieces and imaginary play within the exhibit. It will feature a locally painted mural depicting scenery unique to the Virgin Islands.
Alpine’s VI Children’s Museum Mural Contest is being held to select and highlight a local artist to complement the new exhibit.
Interested artists are encouraged to submit a sketch of their vision to the museum before the deadline of April 23. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel comprised of museum curators, benefactors and local artists. The selected artist will paint a vision on the exhibit’s wall and trim, approximately 15’ wide by 12’ high. The winning entry will be displayed at the VI Children’s Museum located at Buccaneer Mall on St. Thomas and will receive a $2,500 cash prize.
Boss Display of Columbus, Ohio, is well underway in engineering the new exhibit. Alpine Securities, Boss Display and the museum have designed the new exhibit to promote meaningful play for residents and visitors alike. Using a local fruit and market design concept was important in the design conversations, as Alpine wanted to add a Caribbean feel to the museum.
Boss Display is a leading firm in interactive exhibits and has its work featured in libraries, children’s museums, science centers as well as historical and cultural centers worldwide. They are completing the design, construction and installation of this highly anticipated project, which is slated for completion in early summer of 2021.
