Operations at the Bovoni Landfill resumed at 6 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, according to the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA or Authority) Preserving Paradise team. At this time, only household waste will be accepted; the community is asked to please hold seaweed, green waste and metals until further notice.

The Bovoni Landfill closed at 8:20 a.m., Monday, June 8, due to an active fire that originated in the metals section. VIWMA staff and contractors reported metals, including junked cars, were being processed for removal when a vehicle ignited causing the fire.

The fire was suppressed at 6:30 p.m. with the assistance of the Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS), VIWMA staff and contractors Sleepy’s Trucking and A-9. The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) and St. Thomas Rescue supported the firefighting efforts.

The public is strongly urged to remove engine fluids, batteries and tires from vehicles prior to disposal to prevent accidental fires and protect the environment from spills.

For more information, contact the Division of Communications Management at 513-4171 or email communications@viwma.org. Also, follow VIWMA on Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Twitter.
