Diageo USVI to Sponsor Local Athletes in ‘Race to Rebuild’ Triathlon for Charities

St. Croix is set to host its 30th major triathlon on Dec. 2, and Diageo USVI is encouraging local athletes to get in the race. Known as the “Race to Rebuild,” this year’s race is focused on community support and rebuilding after the island was ravished by Hurricane Maria in September 2017.

“Diageo USVI is excited to offer up to $5,000 towards entry fees in the ‘Race to Rebuild’ for athletes who are residents of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John, ages 18 and over,” said Erica J. Johnson, community relations director for Diageo USVI.

“As organizations around the U.S.V.I. continue rebuilding efforts even a year after the 2017 hurricane season, we thought sponsoring Virgin Islands athletes in the triathlon on St. Croix was a great way to encourage our neighbors and friends to take part in a healthy, fun and inspiring event that will raise much-needed funds for local charities,” Johnson said.

This year’s race aims to raise funds for the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, My Brother’s Table and the Caribbean Centers for Boys and Girls Club of the Virgin Islands — all of whom are still working to fully recover since the storm last year.

“Diageo’s sponsorship will be combinable with the hurricane discount currently offered by VI TRI and highlights the neighborly support seen throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands,” said Katherine Pugliese of Un Amore, who is leading the organizing efforts of the VI Tri. “We hope visiting athletes will also take the opportunity to give back to the island through various initiatives, raffles and events throughout the race weekend.”

The community is working tirelessly to restore the island back to normal and is proud to currently be hosting visitors each day. Restaurants, retail shops and activity vendors are eager to welcome local and visiting athletes this December for an unforgettable experience.

Virgin Islands athletes who wish to take advantage of the discounted registration fees supported by Diageo USVI should send an email to [email protected]. The discount will be offered on a first come, first serve basis and will apply to all events, including the long-course, sprint, relays and aquathon.

The race committee is also currently offering athletes a $20 savings on registration as well as a free, 16-week training program. Current registration rates are valid until Nov. 29, and the last day to register is Dec. 1.

VI TRI and Diageo USVI, along with the United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and the National Park Service, look forward to another successful triathlon in America’s paradise.
