BIR Reminds Residents to File Income Tax Returns in the Virgin Islands

Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue

Bona fide residents of the Virgin Islands are reminded that they are required by law to file their individual income tax returns with the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). Tax returns are due to BIR on April 17, 2018.

“Bona fide residents of the Virgin Islands should not file their individual income tax returns, electronically or by mail, with the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS),” said Marvin L. Pickering, director of the BIR.

Taxpayers who file with the IRS and receive erroneous refunds from the IRS will have to repay the erroneous refund, and they will be subject to penalties and interest.

Self-employed taxpayers, however, are required to file two tax returns: the individual income tax return (Form 1040) and the self-employment tax return (Form 1040SS).  The individual income tax return (Form 1040) should be filed with the bureau (BIR), while the self-employment tax return (Form 1040SS) should be submitted to the IRS. Payment of self-employment taxes should not be included on the individual income tax return (Form 1040).
