St. Thomas Man Sentenced to 10 Months

District Court Judge Curtis V. Gomez on Wednesday sentenced Walid John, 37 of St. Thomas, to 10 months in prison for possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of domestic violence, according to acting U.S. Attorney, Joycelyn Hewlett.

Gomez also ordered John to serve three years of supervised release, pay a $100 special assessment, and perform 400 hours of community service.

On Dec. 12, John pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of domestic violence. According to the plea agreement, on Oct. 20 John admitted to being in possession of a firearm and that he had been previously convicted of a domestic violence offense in 2012.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigrid M. Tejo-Sprotte.
