Auto Accident Ends with Assault Arrest

An auto collision Thursday involving two vehicles near the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas ended up with a dead dog and one person arrested for assault, according to the V.I. Police Department.

At 4:21 a.m. officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident in which both vehicles were flipped over.

One of the drivers told police that while driving west on Julian Jackson Drive, with four passengers in her car, she struck a dog that suddenly ran across the street. While making the right turn at the intersection towards UVI, she felt a sudden impact to the rear of the vehicle causing it to flip.

As she exited the vehicle along with her passengers, another person, identified by police as Maai Riga, rushed towards her vehicle screaming, “You killed my dog,” and obscene language. Riga then ran down the roadway away from the scene of the accident.

Police arrested Riga and charged her with first-degree assault.

Police urged anyone with additional information about the accident to contact the VIPD at 340-774- 2211, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-714-9801, the 911 call center, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
